Major Hells Angels trial getting closer
to deliberation -
Vancouver Sun -
VANCOUVER — Will a pregnant juror make it to
the end of a major Hells Angels trial, which
began nine months ago?
On Thursday, the very pregnant juror,
rumoured to be due this month, managed to
make it through another day, sitting for
hours listening to the final charge of B.C.
Supreme Court Justice Selwyn Romilly.
The judge began on June 30 reading his
400-page outline of the law and how it
applies to months of evidence.
By the end of Thursday, the judge appeared
to only have a few more pages left to read.
He is expected to finish Friday, when the
jury is expected to begin its verdict
deliberations.
The jury will be sequestered until it
reaches a unanimous verdict, which could
take up to a week, considering the
voluminous evidence.
The trial, which began last Sept. 11, heard
the testimony of 61 witnesses, including key
witness Michael Plante, who testified for
more than a month.
Plante worked as a police agent and became a
trusted official friend of the Hells Angels
while carrying a secret listening device.
The jury listened to 329 intercepted
communications during the trial.
Once in the jury room, jurors will decide
the significance of 415 exhibits entered at
trial.
The four Hells Angels members on trial
called no evidence.
Ronaldo Lising, Randy Potts, John Punko and
Jean Violette are accused of assault,
extortion and weapons offences.
The 28-count indictment alleges the Hells
Angels chapter is a criminal organization
and that the accused committed such crimes
as extortion and uttering death threats "for
the benefit of, at the direction of, or in
association with a criminal organization, to
wit the East End charter of the Hells
Angels."
Jacques Lemieux, a Quebec motorcycle gang
expert, testified at the trial: "It is my
opinion that the main purpose of the Hells
Angels organization is to facilitate the
criminal activities of its membership."
The Hells Angels maintain they are simply a
motorcycle club.
Outlaws motorcycle club member must
remain in jail -
Chicago Tribune -
CHICAGO - A federal judge has refused to
free a motorcycle club member on bond while
he awaits trial for the bomb that wrecked a
suburban business.
The 41-year-old suspect, Mark Polchan, is
facing a potential 35-year sentence and
prosecutors say that could prompt him to
flee if he were freed on bond.
Judge Ronald Guzman also refused to move
Polchan from the Kankakee County Jail to the
Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown
Chicago. Prosecutors say Polchan posed a
threat to an inmate in the MCC.
Polchan, who is the former operator of a
jewelry store, is accused of igniting the
pipe bomb that wrecked C&S Coin Operated
Amusements of Berwyn in February 2003.

Poker run, pig roast to benefit memorial
park -
SouthCoastToday.com - FREETOWN —
Organizers are revving up for the third
annual Freetown Memorial Park Fundraiser
Motorcycle Poker Run and Pig Roast, which
will take place Sunday.
"The park has come a long way, from a
rock-strewn, scrub oak area to a place where
many visit to pay respects to those who have
served," Selectman Lawrence N. Ashley said.
"However, we still have a lot of work to do,
with our next focus being on memorials for
those who have served in wars and other
conflicts, as well as the police and
firefighting memorials."
The Memorial Park Committee also is raising
funds to install a plaque for Navy Petty
Officer 2nd Class Tyler J. Trahan, who was
killed April 30 in Iraq.
Given the number of people who have
expressed their support for the project,
organizers are expecting at least 100
motorcycles.
This year's run is being dedicated to Ed
Vickery, a Korean War veteran and Freetown
resident who died two years ago. According
to New Bedford veterans agent Donat J.
LeBlanc, Vickery "always had a smile and
wave for everyone" and never had a bad word
to say about anyone, even when he was
dealing with health problems toward the end
of his life.
Registration for the event will take place
at 9 a.m. at the Freetown Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 6643, 89 Middleboro Road,
in East Freetown. The 70-mile run will
depart at 10 a.m. Entertainment will begin
at the post at noon, followed by the pig
roast dinner. Tickets are $20 per
motorcycle, including the dinner, and $15
for just the dinner. For tickets, call (508)
991-6187 or e-mail
vfw6643@comcast.net . Tickets will be
available at the door, but organizers said
tickets tend to sell out quickly.
